The following is a guest post by Debra Johnson. Thank-you Debra for the great article.
All children love making things, and even if more often than not, they create a mess! I know my son loved it when we had craft time at home. I was always looking for a way to keep him happy and productive. Even when he would come to my office to visit, the first thing he wanted was some paper, glue, and a hole punch. Crafting and creativity is a positive and relaxing outlet.
4 Fun and Easy Crafts for Boys
Craft making also involves hand eye coordination and builds dexterity and higher motor functions. Also, crafts are just really fun. Boys love getting into fun, creative projects that engage their mind and hands.
Here are four crafts that I have found that my son and his friends really enjoyed.
1. Clothespin Airplane - All you need to make this simple and fun craft is clothespins and craft sticks! You can decorate them however you would like. Marker, crayon, and even stickers can help boys to personalize their very own plane. Try a bi-wing or tri-wing for extra crafting fun!
2. Paper-Bag Monsters – All you need are:
• paper lunch bags
• crayons
• googly eyes
• glue
Color the bag with crayon monsters; make sure to draw the teeth! Then glue on the googly eyes. There you have it, monster puppets. Have the boys do a show or even attack each other. No worries about breaking anything here, you can always make a new monster.
3. This one calls for water guns, and what boy doesn’t like shooting a water gun? Glue white paper to an empty cereal box and then cut out several monsters. Then have the boys draw on the faces. Older kids can do the cutting too.
Then cut out a narrow strip from the cereal box and cut two slits in it. Line up those slits with two slits cut in the base of the monster. Once combined, they will help the monster to stand up. Then take your creations outside and have a shootout!
4. Cloud Dough - What is soft as a cloud but moldable too? Cloud dough! All you need is 8 cups of flour and 1 cup of baby oil. Mix the ingredients together with your hands until well combined. It may take up to five minutes of mixing. Then just supply the buckets and shovels! Kids can play with it like sand, but inside and much less messy. Plus, it smells great!
Creativity is of lasting benefit. It helps children later in life in problem solving and generating new, creative ideas. It is also great practice for their motor skills, helps them to learn how to follow instructions and gives them a sense of accomplishment. Craft time is a great opportunity to enjoy some one on one with your children and have a ton of fun in the process!
Having fun is an important part of childhood, and its value should never be ignored when coming up with creative activities for children to learn and grow.
