Disney's The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar {Review}

THE LION GUARD is now available on DVD (released February 23, 2016). We've always loved The Lion King and this is a great sequel. Little Brandon is always talking about the characters of Mafusa (from the original Lion King), who now has a grandson named Kion. Often, we tell the story as a bedtime story and never gets bored of it.

DESCRIPTION: Meet Kion, second-born cub of Simba and Nala, as he assumes the role of leader of “The Lion Guard,” an elite team of animals tasked with preserving the Pride Lands. Follow him as he assembles a group of unlikely heroes: Bunga the honey badger, Fuli the cheetah, Beshte the hippo and Ono the egret. Join them on a thrilling adventure as they use their unique abilities to defend the Pride Lands from predators and maintain balance within the Circle of Life. Bursting with humor, music, beloved characters and heart, The Lion Guard: Return Of The Roar is a must-own for the entire family!

LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales {Review}

LEGO STAR WARS: DROID TALES was recently released on DVD March 1, 2016. Little Brandon had a chance to watch it and he really enjoyed it. We thought it was entertaining and funny.  Our family is a fan of both Star Wars AND Lego; and we love watching movies together so this is a bonus for us. The animations are pretty awesome and the storylines of each of the five episodes are easy to follow.

DESCRIPTION: The fun begins following the victory celebration in the Ewok village on Endor, at the end of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. R2-D2 and C-3PO have gathered to regale Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca and the other Rebels with the tales of their adventures that led to the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. An accidental kidnapping occurs while the droids are reminiscing, and suddenly you’re taken on a new journey that leads to the retelling of the entire Star Wars saga, as told by R2-D2 and C-3PO! It’s hilarious and playful, packed with all your favorite interlocking characters. LEGO® STAR WARS™: DROID TALES is intergalactic thrills for the whole family!

Disney's Zootopia {Review}

Disney's Zootopia was released in theatres on March 4, 2016. The reviews have been very positive and tops box office with $73.7 million during the first weekend of opening in the US and Canada.

DESCRIPTION: The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighbourhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when rookie Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery.

OUR REVIEW: Thanks to Disney Studios Canada, we were invited to see the film for the Zootopia screening. We took our Little One (Brandon) to see the film at Silvercity at Metropolis, Metrotown and he was all excited about it. The storyline is well-written, amazing animation and graphics, and a bit of comedy that keeps the audience entertained. There is also a surprising twist. It's brilliant!

Our favorite scenes are when Officer Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde hustled on each other and they soon became good friends. Some scenes may be a bit scary for the younger viewers, especially where the animals have gone "savage" and wild. That's what my 7-year-old says. I'm not going to spoil all of it by going to details, so you'll have to go see the movie to find out for yourself how Officer Judy Hopps solved the crime.

Disney-Pixar's Inside Out Advanced Screening Giveaway

Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? Disney-Pixar's original new film "Inside Out" ventures inside the mind to find out.

Based in Headquarters, the control center inside 11-year-old Riley's mind, five Emotions are hard at work, led by lighthearted optimist Joy (voice of Amy Poehler), whose mission is to make sure Riley stays happy. Fear (voice of Bill Hader) heads up safety, Anger (voice of Lewis Black) ensures all is fair and Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) prevents Riley from getting poisoned—both physically and socially. Sadness (voice of Phyllis Smith) isn’t exactly sure what her role is, and frankly, neither is anyone else.

When Riley's family relocates to a scary new city, the Emotions are on the job, eager to help guide her through the difficult transition. But when Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley's mind—taking some of her core memories with them—Fear, Anger and Disgust are left reluctantly in charge. Joy and Sadness must venture through unfamiliar places—Long Term Memory, Imagination Land, Abstract Thought and Dream Productions—in a desperate effort to get back to Headquarters, and Riley.

Directed by Academy Award winner Pete Docter ("Monsters, Inc.", "Up"), produced by Jonas Rivera, p.g.a. ("Up") and featuring an original score by Michael Giacchino ("The Incredibles," "Ratatouille," "Up"), Disney-Pixar's "Inside Out" opens in theatres on June 19, 2015.

Disney-Pixar's "Inside Out" to Make its World Premiere at 2015 Cannes Film Festival

Disney•Pixar's “Inside Out” not only ventures inside the mind—it’s heading to the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival for its World Premiere.

Academy Award® winner Pete Docter, who helmed Disney•Pixar’s “Up” (the first animated film ever to be the Festival’s Opening-Ceremony film), directs “Inside Out,” an original new movie from Pixar Animation Studios. Docter, producer Jonas Rivera (“Up”), and co-director Ronnie Del Carmen (“Up”) will be on hand in Cannes, along with members of the all-star English-language voice cast.

“We are overjoyed at being included in this year's official selection at Cannes,” said Docter. “With ‘Inside Out,’ we spent years imagining – and then building – never-before-seen settings and characters within the mind. It was an incredible, fun and exciting challenge and now we can’t wait to share it with the world.”

Disney/Pixar's #InsideOut New Trailer Released

The NEW trailer for Disney/Pixar’s INSIDE OUT is now available on EllenTube.com and EllenTV!

Directed by Oscar-winner Pete Docter ("Up," "Monsters, Inc.") and featuring the voices of Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling and Phyllis Smith, INSIDE OUT opens in theatres on June 19, 2015.

From an adventurous balloon ride above the clouds to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award-winning director Pete Docter has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In Disney•Pixar’s original movie “ Inside Out,” he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all — inside the mind.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Disney "Big Hero 6" XPRIZE Challenge Winners

XPRIZE, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and Disney Corporate Citizenship announced the winners of the DISNEY BIG HERO 6 – XPRIZE CHALLENGE today. Much like the characters in Disney’s “Big Hero 6,” people between the ages of 8 and 17 were asked to harness their creativity and come up with innovative ideas to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges using science, technology, engineering, art and/or mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.).

Hundreds of videos were submitted and narrowed down to 20 finalists. From there, 6 winners were selected based on a combination of public voting and the scores from a panel of judges: Dr. Ed Catmull, President of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios; Gwynne Shotwell, president and CEO of SpaceX; Dean Kamen, an inventor, entrepreneur, and founder of FIRST ®; Anousheh Ansari, co-founder and chairwoman of Prodea Systems (and the first female private space explorer); and Jon Snoddy, VP, Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development.

The real-life “Big Hero 6” is comprised of:

Kamran Ansari, age 9, of Tustin, California, devised a product packaging rating system in order to educate consumers on the wastefulness of a product’s packaging. His system enables the consumer to make environmentally conscious decisions and reduce their carbon footprint.

Jasmyne Mendoza, age 11, of Seattle, Washington, developed a solution to world hunger by constructing a biosphere where salt water from our oceans is evaporated and distilled into clean drinking water.

Dominick Quaye, age 12, of San Leandro, California, proposed a way to generate clean energy through the use of a high-altitude power generator held in place by massive weather balloons.

Chase Lewis, age 15, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, invented a way to deliver emergency smoke masks to people trapped in burning buildings through the use of a football-shaped pod he designed and tested.

Carolyn Mennecke, age 17, of Rochester, Minnesota, proposed a more effective way to improve windshield visibility using ultraviolet light sensors to reduce the glare of the sun at dawn and dusk.

Kelsey Ann Murobayshi, age 17, of Honolulu, Hawaii, envisioned an innovative solution to safer and environmentally friendly transportation through the use of self-driving “pods”.

Said Catmull, "Watching the finalists’ submissions, I was so impressed by the creativity and passion in each of their videos. It was an absolute pleasure to be part of this judging panel. We look forward to hosting them at the Hollywood premiere of ‘Big Hero 6.’"

"At XPRIZE, we believe that innovation can come from anywhere and that the most effective way to address the world’s biggest problems is by tasking the public to come up with solutions," said Trish Halamandaris, senior vice president marketing & communications at XPRIZE. "The creativity and ingenuity of the submissions for this contest reinforce this belief and prove that these young people are not the innovators of tomorrow but rather the innovators of today."

The winners will travel to Los Angeles in November for three days of innovation and inspiration, including a private tour of Walt Disney Animation Studios, a meet-and-greet with the creative minds at Disney Imagineering, a special Visioneering™ experience at XPRIZE headquarters, and a walk down the red carpet at the Hollywood premiere of Disney’s Big Hero 6.

In addition, they’ll each be reimbursed for one (1) contestant registration for FIRST ® LEGO League for the 2014-2015 competition season and receive a Special littleBits® NASA Space Kit and cloudBit™ Starter Kit.

Supporting XPRIZE Partners include FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), littleBits Electronics and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Disney Planes: Fire & Rescue

Planes: Fire & Rescue is a new comedy-adventure about second chances, featuring a dynamic crew of elite firefighting aircraft devoted to protecting historic Piston Peak National Park from raging wildfire. When world famous air racer Dusty (voice of Dane Cook) learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he must shift gears and is launched into the world of aerial firefighting. Dusty joins forces with veteran fire and rescue helicopter Blade Ranger and his courageous team, including spirited super scooper Dipper (voice of Julie Bowen), heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter, ex-military transport Cabbie and a lively bunch of brave all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers. Together, the fearless team battles a massive wildfire and Dusty learns what it takes to become a true hero.

I had the opportunity to watch the screening of Planes: Fire & Rescue with the family a couple days before the actual release date.  I didn't expect too much of this movie, but I thought it was quite entertaining. It gives a good message that younger kids can learn about forest fires and how to prevent them. My 5-year-old enjoyed the movie. There were some laughs and tears. The middle to ending was a little emotional because of Dusty's broken gearbox that his friends had trouble finding a replacement.  I think this sequel has improved much better than the first animated film of Planes.
